Biography

George Okitoi is a Legal and Tax Associate in TASLAF's Commercial Advisory, Dispute Resolution and Tax departments. His expertise spans law, taxation, regulatory compliance and emerging technologies — enabling him to provide innovative, risk-aware and forward-looking solutions to businesses, nonprofits and development organisations operating in complex regulatory environments. He has successfully represented clients at the Tax Appeals Tribunal, advised on landmark cryptocurrency taxation matters in Uganda, and holds additional certifications in carbon taxation, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.

Employment, Commercial Advisory & Litigation

  • Participated in the representation of a communal land association in negotiations for the sale and lease of land to a major cement manufacturer in Uganda, worth over UGX 47 billion.
  • Assisted in advising UNAIDS on an amicus curiae application before the Supreme Court of Uganda.
  • Advised the International Centre for Transitional Justice on a novel amicus curiae application before the International Crimes Division of the High Court of Uganda.
  • Advised a Chinese multinational company on the tax implications of carrying out cryptocurrency mining in Uganda.
  • Supports the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in reviewing and adapting the WWY Guide to Uganda's context, with focus on forcibly displaced youth — including a desk review, stakeholder consultations, adaptation of the guide and delivery of a Training of Trainers workshop (Jul 2025–ongoing).
  • Assisted in advising an international impact finance organisation on the recovery of a USD 400,000 loan from a Ugandan-based company.
  • Successfully represented a client against Nexus Green Ltd for the unlawful termination of a consultancy agreement — court awarded damages of USD 31,000.
  • Represented a client before the Registrar at URSB challenging the unlawful and procedurally defective removal of a shareholder by a leading tour and travel company.
  • Provided expert legal counsel to AICS on a comprehensive review of service contracts and employment agreements for compliance with Ugandan labour laws.
  • Advised Girls First Fund on safeguarding policy and the consequences of breaches by current and former employees, strengthening safeguarding frameworks and response strategies.
  • Advised USAID Grantees on the lawful restructuring process following the termination of USAID funding in 2025 — labour-law compliance, redundancy procedures, risk mitigation and engagement with regulators.
  • Acted for numerous clients in divorce, guardianship, adoption and other family-related disputes at the High Court Family Division.
  • Reviewed employment contracts, HR manuals, volunteer contracts, probation contracts, casual/temporary contracts, consultancy agreements and tenancy agreements for Mercy Corps, WALIMU, Village Enterprise, Cycle Connect, UpEnergy, Spouts of Water, African Youth Action Network, HEKS/EPER and ACORD.

Tax Advisory & Dispute Resolution

  • Provided legal opinions on tax compliance, deemed VAT, voluntary disclosure procedure, objection to tax assessments, transfer pricing, ledger reconciliation and tax incentives to clients including the American Bar Association, ACORD, Grameen, Groundbreaker Talents Limited, Church World Service, Hello Tractor, Johanniter, Latitude Trading Company, Uganda Bio Diversity Trust Fund and Okoa Refuge.
  • Successfully obtained income tax exemptions from URA for HEKS/EPER, Human Trafficking Institute, AVSI, ICTJ and other clients.
  • Represented a major social enterprise in Northern Uganda before the Tax Appeals Tribunal and successfully challenged a tax liability of UGX 130,000,000.
  • Defended a Certified B Corporation specialty cocoa and craft chocolate producer against a tax assessment of over UGX 420 million at the Tax Appeals Tribunal — secured an order to vacate the entire assessment.
  • Provides tax compliance advisory and support to leading NGOs and non-profits — Mercy Corps, SNV Netherlands, Church World Service, Village Enterprise Fund, ABA, Human Trafficking Institute, Johanniter, ICTJ, HEKS/EPER, ACORD, Wildlife Conservation Society, African Wildlife Foundation, AVSI Foundation, OneWorld Health and Grameen Foundation.
